Dispatch: How Small Things Can Make A Big Impact With AI
What babies, small businesses & AI have in common
Hello Friend,
Did you have a good week? I hope so.
This week there’s a common theme to everything: how small things can make a big impact. It was totally accidental, of course! Or was it…
Anyway, I published the fourth episode of my podcast interview series with Mary Kemp, you’ll find details and links to this below.
My article this week looks at the surprising things that babies can teach AI that MIT professors can’t even come close to.
Got any thoughts or feelings that come up for you about this weeks content? Join me & others to discuss them in the new subscriber chat, i’d love to hear from you.

Tiny Teachers, Big Impact: What Babies Can Teach AI
The Surprising Lessons AI Can Learn from Drooling Bundles of Joy
You might be surprised to hear that babies may hold the key to unlocking true intelligence in artificial intelligence (AI) systems, yes babies!
Despite the impressive capabilities of modern AI like ChatGPT, these language models still lack the common sense and understanding of the world that even a toddler possesses. Researchers at New York University have taken an innovative approach by training an AI system on the sights and sounds experienced by a baby named Sam over 18 months, allowing the AI to learn word-referent mappings and align its visual and linguistic conceptual systems.
This research highlights that while current AI excels at language generation, it lacks the fundamental intelligence and understanding of reality that humans possess. As experts like Yann LeCun, a pioneer in AI, point out, true intelligence involves reasoning, planning, persistent memory, and comprehending the physical world – abilities that today's AI systems struggle with. By learning from babies, AI may be able to develop the common sense intelligence that has eluded researchers thus far, paving the way for a future where AI can match or surpass human-level intelligence in a more holistic and grounded way.
